Katherine Bowling takes the views that surround her upstate-New York home as inspiration, distilling the landscape and the light that falls on it throughout the day and night to bare essentials of form, color, light, and shadow. Her work has a kinship of spirit with the great landscape painters of the past, but she uses thoroughly contemporary compositional devices, including many associated with photography. Bowling’s un-peopled views of nature combine representational landscape with an abstracted mood of mysterious quiet, almost as if she dreamed the scene rather than experienced it.
