Thomas Joshua Cooper is considered one of the most important landscape photographers working today. Using a 100-year-old, large format camera, he makes dense, still compositions of views taken from extreme and inaccessible points of land that resonate with a sense of waiting, and of anticipation. The son of a quarter-bred Cherokee Indian, Cooper inherits the American tradition of landscape art, which aims to record the spirituality in the landscape rather than a direct documentation.
