April Gornick does not paint pictures from nature. She speaks about her work in terms of it being “fictive and artificial.” “Artificial has a bad connotation in our society” says Gornik, “but my feeling about artifice is that artifice is beautiful and is essential to art.” Gornik approaches her work as an exploration of light and color to produce creative and different views of nature, encouraging the viewer to re-imagine the familiar elements of landscape.
