Iris print with hand collaged playing cards, ed. 50

Vintage photographs found at flea markets and antique stores which are associated with his African American background, provide the basis for Whitfield Lovell’s work. Through simple portraiture he compels viewers to explore the inner thoughts and feelings of the person in the portrait. Lovell introduces antique objects into the work giving the sitter a sense of personal history. In Chance, 2002, Lovell recreates an old portrait of an African American woman and combines it with antique playing cards, giving his work a place in history.
