“Ever seen dogs treated as art supplies?” asks William Wegman, arguably the most well known photographer of dogs ever. Wegman is particularly influenced by his extraordinary relationship with his dogs Man Ray—a Weimaraner who first met Wegman’s camera in 1979, Fay Ray, Crooky, Batty, Chundo and Chip. He credits his dogs with an artistic intelligence, as if they were full collaborators in the work, unleashing the witty, satiric, endearing deadpan humor that permeates so many of his photographs. In Frances, Cher, Pat and Sally, Wegman plays with portraiture showcasing four Hollywood stars, while Strength, Love, Hope, Endurance and Courage all portray his dogs as attributes of human emotions.
