Joel Meyerowitz (b. 1938, New York) began his photography career after becoming inspired by Robert Frank’s work and quitting his job at an advertising agency. He is a self-proclaimed “street photographer” who walks the streets capturing snapshots of life. Unlike street photographers at the beginning of the 20th century, he worked in color photography. Meyerowitz himself was instrumental in changing the attitudes toward the use of color photography, which was previously not taken seriously as an art form. He photographed the aftermath of the September 11 attacks at World Trade Center and was the only photographer granted unrestricted access to Ground Zero immediately after the attack.

Meyerowitz is a two time Guggenheim fellow whose works can be viewed at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Whitney Museum of Art (New York), the Museum of Fine Art (Boston), and the New York Public Library, among others. Meyerowitz lives and works in New York City.

Meyerowitz’s work was installed as part of RxART’s inaugural project at Rockefeller University Hospital.
