  • Avant Garde Preschool!

This Sunday was our first Avant Garde Preschool class!  The Avant Garde Preschool program was originally started by Andy Spade and Anthony Sperduti, owners of Partners & Spade, a storefront and studio on Great Jones Street in Manhattan. Catering to children ages 5-12, the program has previously been led by artists such as Karen Kimmel, Donald Baechler, and Confetti System.

To kick off the new partnership between Partners & Spade and RxArt, Dan Colen hosted the inaugural class.  The young participants spent a fun-filled afternoon using brightly colored flower petals and an assortment of M&M's to create vibrant, nontraditional works of art.  Dan encouraged the kids to create their works using whatever methods came to mind, reminding them that when it comes to art, there are "no rules".  While some of the kids stuck to the "traditional" method of working while seated at the table, many kids created their masterpieces by putting the materials on the floor and jumping up and down on the paper!

We can't say we had as much fun cleaning it up as we had creating it ( check out Partners & Spade's "Aftermath" photos to see why!), but a great afternoon was had by all and we are so thankful to Dan Colen for leading such an amazing class and Partners & Spade for hosting us!

(*The cost of the class was $40 per child and all proceeds went directly to RxArt.)

  • RxArt Visits CT Scanner in Oak Lawn, IL

I spent the holiday weekend in Chicago visiting family and while I was there I decided to take a side trip to see the Jeff Koons installation at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois. I have seen many pictures of the installation but nothing could prepare me for seeing it in person--the colors are even more vibrant than they appear in photographs and the actual size of the CT scanner and the decals is much larger than I anticipated.

I could spot the room with the installation even from a distance, and as a nurse led me down the hall and to the room, I could see the colors spilling out into the hallway. I was completely taken aback when I entered the room and proceeded to spend quite a bit of time just taking everything in.  As someone who experiences anxiety when visiting the doctor or the hospital, I can only wish that every room could be like this one--I would feel a lot more positive about visiting the doctor or getting tests done if it could take place in such a colorful and cheerful setting!

  • Happy 2012!

Happy (almost) 2012!  With many exciting installations forthcoming, RxArt is eagerly awaiting the new year. Fourteen James Welling photographs will be installed in Emory University Hospital's Department of Nuclear Medicine (thanks to all the generous RxArt supporters this past month!).  A fantastic site-specific Trenton Doyle Hancock mural will be installed at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.  Mid-January, we will be installing prints in New York City's Metropolitan Hospital thanks to the generosity of Agnes Gund.

RxArt is also excited about a project in the pipeline with the Manhattan VA Hospital.  A series of Malcolm Morley prints are slated to be installed in a waiting room for PTSD patients.  Additionally, a series of large-scale photographs from David Levinthal's Baseball series will be installed in three adjacent hospital waiting areas.

  • Bring Art to Atlanta's Patients

We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and enjoyed time with family and friends.  Now that the holiday season is officially upon us, we know you are starting to think about gifts and what to get for your loved ones. Don't stress--RxArt has the perfect solution sure to satisfy even the pickiest of your friends or family.

To complete the installation of fourteen James Welling photographs at Emory University Hospital's Department of Nuclear Medicine, we just need to raise $2,000.  A small donation can help bring us a step closer to transforming the current space with Welling's vibrant photographs, creating an unexpectedly beautiful environment for patients, families and hospital staff.

Please consider lending your support between December 1st - 31st to help Emory begin 2012 with this stunning installation.

    • Donate $25 and receive an artist-signed copy of RxArt's newest and most expansive coloring book to date, Between the Lines, Vol. 3
    • Donate $100 and receive an autographed Terry Richardson puzzle in addition to a signed coloring book
    • Donate $250 or more and receive a signed gelatin silver print of New York taken by Life Magazine photographer, John Muller, between 1938 and 1945

RxArt is a registered 501(c)(3) organization.  If you would like your donation to be considered fully tax-deductible, rather than receiving one of the aforementioned products, please specify "Contribution Only" in the "Message" section of the "Donate" page.

The smallest donation counts - thank you for your support and allowing us to continue pursuing our mission of improving otherwise sterile environments through contemporary art.  Please click HERE to make your donation!

  • New Addition to RxArt

I am so excited to be RxArt's newest intern!  I first read about RxArt in an article in The NY Times Magazine almost two years ago and have been following them ever since.  I was drawn to the organization for both personal and professional reasons--growing up, my brother was in and out of the hospital and I know firsthand how important the presence of art and color is to lift the spirits of both the patients and visitors.

I graduated from Cornell University in 2008 with a B.S in Fiber Science and Apparel Design and soon after decided to pursue obtaining a Master of Social work degree.  I went to Yeshiva University and received my MSW in the Spring of 2011 and I have been trying to find a way to blend my love of art and desire to do something with a philanthropic edge.  I checked back in to see if RxArt had any opportunities, and here I am! I am thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful organization and look forward to working with them on all of their exciting projects and initiatives.
