Matthew Day Jackson and R.H. Quaytman Are Big Draws in This Year's RxArt Coloring Book
ArtInfo 20 September 2011
Diane Brown founded RxArt 11years ago after visiting a hospital and noticing the drab interiors of the treatment room. The gallerist, art dealer, and consultant realized she could put her connections to use and brighten up children’s healthcare facilities with contemporary art. Each year since, Brown has raised money for RxArt through PARTY!, an annual benefit and silent auction. The organization is responsible for putting life into sterile environments with works by several artists, including Will Cotton, Jeff Koons, and Ryan McGinley.
The 2011 PARTY! takes place on September 22 at the Highline Stages. RxArt, in conjunction with cosmetic line Chanel Beauté, will unveil the organization’s new coloring book, ”Between the Lines Volume III,” which will be distributed to young hospital patients.Chanel Beauté ambassadorsJennifer Brill, Poppy Delevingne, Leigh Lezark,Caroline Sieber, and Vanessa Traina are chairing the benefit, and Leo Fitzpatrick and Cassie Coane will DJ (although sadly, Simon de Pury will not bebe hitting the decks as he did last year). Among the pieces for auction are "Blockbuster," a 2011 Terry Richardson photograph of a scribbled-out sign of the video store of the same name; "Paper Bag Princess," an image of model Sasha Pivovarova by Craig McDean from the September 2009 issue of W magazine; and "New Disturbed Sites," a 2010 watercolor byJason Middlebrook.
Over 50 contemporary artists contributed to "Between the Lines Volume III," including Rob Pruitt, who designed the cover, and Venice Biennale darling Josh Smith, who contributed a pair of dueling dinosaurs. Starchitect Zaha Hadid made an abstract drawing of swirls and shapes reminiscent of one of her buildings, and conceptualist artist Matthew Keegan conjured up a piece appropriately using the word "healing." Shepard Fairey, Nick Cave, R.H. Quaytman, Matthew Day Jackson, and Hope Atherton also conceived pages for the coloring book. The kids are in for a real treat.
